The performers of this benefit concert promoted the purpose of this event -marine conservation- during a house concert held on November 10, 2024.
This concert aims to raise awareness and inspire action for ocean protection through the power of music. Music connects people and can unite them for a common cause. By attending, the audience will enjoy unforgettable performances while supporting the movement to protect the ocean—one of Earth’s most vital resources. Small changes in awareness and behavior can make a big impact.
The ocean is the lifeline of our planet, home to about 2.2 million marine species, and responsible for producing approximately 50% of the oxygen we breathe. It also absorbs about one-third of global carbon emissions, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change. In California, with its over 800 miles of coastline, the ocean supports vital ecosystems and contributes billions of dollars to the economy through tourism, fishing, and recreational activities each year. However, the rapid decline of coral reefs and other marine habitats threatens biodiversity. Coral reefs support around 25% of marine life, but they are rapidly disappearing due to pollution and rising ocean temperatures. Harmful pollutants from agriculture are also worsening this issue. Protecting the ocean is essential not only for the health of the planet but also for human survival and prosperity.
Over the past 30 years, approximately 50% of coral reefs have been lost globally. In the U.S., regions like Florida have seen more than 80% of their coral reefs destroyed. Meanwhile, plastic pollution is worsening marine health, with 11 million tons entering the ocean annually. As plastic breaks down, it generates microplastics that harm marine life and humans, who ingest about 5 grams weekly, equivalent to the weight of a credit card.
Agricultural runoff, which includes fertilizers, pesticides, and chemicals, also contributes to pollution. These pollutants flow into rivers and oceans, creating "dead zones" where oxygen is depleted, and marine life cannot survive. One of the largest dead zones in the U.S. exists in the Gulf of Mexico, spanning thousands of square miles annually. Addressing these issues is critical for the restoration of ocean health and the protection of ecosystems.
The ocean has always been a huge part of our lives—a place where we’ve made some of our best memories. From carefree toddler days building sandcastles and splashing in the waves to teenage adventures riding surfboards, watching sunsets, and hanging out with friends, the beach feels like home. But as we’ve grown up, we’ve also started noticing the challenges our oceans face, like plastic pollution and disappearing coastlines. That’s why we’re proud to support the Surfrider Foundation.
Founded in 1984 in Malibu, California, Surfrider is committed to protecting the ocean, waves, and beaches. With over 80 chapters worldwide, the organization leads initiatives like water quality monitoring, beach cleanups, reducing plastic pollution, and advocating for ocean-friendly policies. By supporting Surfrider, we contribute to the preservation of the marine environment for both current and future generations, ensuring others can experience the same connection to the sea that we’ve been lucky to enjoy.
Surfrider’s key activities include:
These activities help protect marine biodiversity, improve public access to clean beaches, and promote sustainable practices worldwide.
Protection efforts require significant funding for research, education, cleanup, and policy advocacy. In 2023, Surfrider raised $12.43 million to expand their influence and activities. The funding goal for this concert is $3,000, which will support essential activities like beach cleanups and legislative campaigns. All donations will be made directly through the donation link provided by Surfrider, contributing to a healthier ocean and a sustainable future.
Beyond donations, there are several ways everyone can contribute to ocean protection:
Small, consistent actions can lead to significant change.
Let’s work together to ensure the ocean remains a valuable resource for future generations.
